Refering to the Garter's Hype circle for new technologies, I position most of traditional and buzz security technologies as the below diagram:

where SVM stands for security vulnerability management, SOC for security operations center, Id Mgmt. for identity management, UTM for unified threats management, App. Sec. for application security, SKM for security knowledge management and SMW for security middleware.
